It may seem a little irrelevent to NZ poker players, but last week a South Carolina judged finally recognised poker as a ‘game of skill’ as opposed to a game of chance.
Mount Pleasant Municipal Judge Larry Duffy made this ruling after hearing a case of 20 people arrested in a ‘gambling raid’ in the state in 2006. The prosecutors argued that it was a ‘for-profit’ organisation, where as the players simply painted it as a fun game among friends.
This is just one of many events that are slowing pointing to the US lawmakers identifying poker as a game of skill, bringing it closer to being legalised online. Once this happens, you can be sure your favourite poker rooms will fill up fast to levels that will eclipse the pre-UIEGA days. This will in turn encourage more poker rooms to spring up and provide Kiwi players with a lot more choice when it comes to selecting a room to play in.
