Things got underway at around half past twelve today as the first group of players took to the tables in the SKYCITY Festival of Poker Main Event. Certainly no shortage of caps, hoodies, headphones and sunnies as the field got down to business.

Massage was the preference for many to ease away early tournament nerves.

CELEBRITYnoun, a famous or well known person.

CELEBRITY POKER TOURNAMENTnoun, a chance to see who out of selected NZ celebrities has an ounce of game at the Poker table.

The SKYCITY Celebrity Invitational gets underway on Tuesday night at 6.15. A stellar field of around 150 entrants from all walks of life will take to the tables for the most part to enjoy the occasion but don’t be fooled by the smiling and handshaking, there is more at stake here than purely bragging rights. That’s the great thing about our game, almost everyone fancies themselves as a contender and you can be sure the tension levels will be high come the business end of this event.

Here is the just a sample of the ‘talent’ this tournament has attracted and what could be better than to watch your favourite celebs making calls they should never make and taking down pots the experts tell them they have no rights to be in. Just imagine the fun with some of these potential head to head battles.

Ian Smith & Mark Richardson, Mark Sainsbury & Paul Holmes, Hamish McKay & Neil Waka, Richard Loe & Allan Whetton, Siobhan Marshall & Fleur Saville, Vicky Lee & Aja Rock, Savage & Mareko, Kathryn Powely & Kylie Bailey

So as the SKYCITY Festival of Poker rolls on, get a crew together come up to Level 3, grab a drink then sit back and watch the best live drama there is – POKER !

Poker players across NZ will relate to this…

Ever feel like poker just doesn’t get the recognition it deserves in NZ? Sick of seeing all kinds of other sports being featured on TV but never seeing anything about NZ poker, unless it’s one of those celebrity shows?

Well you’re not alone, ‘poker’ himself has had a crack at TVNZ recently about this very issue, check it out…(it’s genius!)

It all starts tomorrow ! Will you be part of New Zealand’s biggest poker week ?

The SKYCITY Festival of Poker gets underway on Saturday October 10th and offers you the last chance to qualify for the NZPT Auckland (the main event) via the SKYCITY Satellite Series.

A satellite is a smaller tournament held before the main event which allows players to buy in at a lower level than that of direct entry, based on the number of entries into the satellite game at least one person sometimes more will win their way into a higher satellite or the main event itself. This means for as little as $90 you could be sitting down with the pros and playing for a first prize of around $300,000 ! for more details on the Satellite Series go to www.festivalofpoker.co.nz.

Don’t forget that whether you are a pro, wannabe pro or just a rookie there is lots of great stuff going on over the next 8 days which you can participate in or grab a mate and sit on the sidelines and maybe learn a thing or two, hope to see you there.

It’s been a while since this site was updated, mainly just because I’m so slack! I’ve got a ton of other sites in different markets and Poker NZ just got away on me for a while (sad I know).

But the good news is, we have a new Admin starting soon. He will be keeping the boards clean, posting up all the news and offering his opinion on a few things too.

We’ll also be doing a bit of a site overhaul, so don’t be surprised if you see things changing around here.

If you want to post anything on the front page here (poker league news, casino news etc), please send your press releases to: adam@pokernz.com and I’ll make sure it gets the coverage it deserves.

We actually have over 1000 registered users on site now, so we’re going to ramp things up and get those lurkers out into the open!

I’ve also just returned from an online casino conference in Budapest where I caught up with Doyle Brunson (in person!), met with a number of poker rooms and secured some fantastic deals for my members, so keep an eye out for those over the next few weeks.

I’ll keep you posted,

Adam
