I hope there will be drug testing… Ive seen guys at sky city for 3 days strait… but they have help from upside down b.

  2. I know what you mean. ALL players will be signing a contrat before starting to make them aware that we are within our rights to have our FULLY trained medical staff assess you if there is a HINT of illegal drugs being used. This will result in INSTANT DISUALIFICAION. I mean if Phil Laak can do with without any CAFFINE us kiwi’s can do it too!!! What say you?

  3. kakitee says:

i think its kinda rude to try and take a guys record if u aren’t planning on beating it by a significant amount.

i hope the game is at least the same stakes phil laak played out of respect (10/20 knowing him), because i for one don’t really care if some guy manages to stay awake for 5 days playing some $100 homegame, and i think the rest of the world doesn’t either. phil laak posted a small winner over his session, and i think that should be a prerequisite.

    - not trying to be too much of a hater, i just think that if ur gonna do it, do it right.

  4. Shaughant says:

Kakitee, that’s ridiculous. Phil Laak has supported this event from the get-go, he has been very encouraging. The event is a fundraiser for charity. If that’s not “doing it right”, then you apparently think that the amount of money on the table is the prerequisite for a record attempt to be made? Perhaps you should travel down to Wanganui, play some poker, and meet some real poker enthusiasts from a small New Zealand town who are having fun, fun, fun. or better yet fork out some of your obvious wealth to sponsor someone into the record attempt.

  5. Daniel J Francis says:

I agree with everything kakitee said.

  6. The Guiness World Record is for Poker Endurance, not Poker Skill or Poker-I-Can-Beat-Anybody. I’ve watched the Phil Laak footage and saw him make a lot of really HUGE mistakes as the hours ground on. He re-bought and re-bought and broke the record (walked away with around $6000 I think).

We understand that the event doesn’t call for great skill and are running Sit-&-Gos and Tournaments for those who want to test their poker skills, not their ability to stay awake for 4.79 days.

So if you’re not up for World Record attempt, come and try your best against the rest…. we are not afraid :)

  7. kakitee says:

“playing poker for ~120hours” to me means forcing yourself to continue competing with at least somewhat competent opponents for a ridiculously uncomfortable amount of time. hence the achievement of going the distance is comprised not only of staying awake, but also playing poker.

    - if you could just fold every hand would it be worthy of ‘world record’ status? the easiest way i could think to make a ‘fair’ attempt at overtaking the already set record is therefore to limit the variables, so the people attempting to break it should definitely have to play for relevant stakes vs other thinking players, and showing a profit by the end of the session (even though a small sample) should be required. just my opinion obviously, but i feel its justified.

for what its worth i don’t like phil laak

  8. Hi Kakitee,
I think your actually missing the whole point of this exercise. The main reason we started this was to have a fundraiser for various Childrens Foundations that have helped myself and my special needs son to continue his life. With out these, he would not be with us today. Secondly, Phil Laak did this as an advertising stunt for his new Web Online playing site. GREAT publicity stunt. HE also did it as a fun raiser for a childs Foundation too.
This attempt for the organisers is seen as such:1) A funraiser to benefit Childrens Foundations, 2) To raise worlds wide awareness of poker playing in New Zealand and to bring it to the world stage again as have so many players lately.
We are not loooking for “Tall poppy;s” to bring it down, just good old Kiwi Ingenuity to help promote Poker Playing in NZ. But thank you for your opinion.

  9. Hi Kakitee,
I am Heiko Zoglauer one of the organisers of the World Record Attempt.
I find it is really interesting your opinion. I want to make you aware of a couple of things.
This is a CHARITY EVENT for the Children of New Zealand. Do you find it wrong to help these children of New Zealand? we believe the children of New Zeland are the future of New Zelalnd. If we all had you thinking then we would have never of made it to the moon, or indeed make the progress we have to date.
We are trying to break the world record because it is NOT easy, it is hard.
Here are two points that maybe you will think about a little:
    1. This is a CHARITY EVENT to help children

    2. What is wrong with putting New ZeEaland poker on the World stage. We as Kiwis LOVE that challenge.
    You do not?

  10. kakitee says:

i didn’t realise the initial one (or this one) were just charity events, i guess i skimmed the info and only saw ‘nz to break world record’ and interpreted it in my own way with partial info.

thanks for ragging on me though :)

  11. Daniel J Francis says:

I agree with what kakitee said. (again)

  12. Shaughant says:

Sorry, mate, I wasn’t ragging on you so much as filling you in on the extra details. I would say the object of the exercise for the players is to participate in a world record attempt doing something they love to do. The object of the ENTIRE exercise is as above, to raise awareness of this great game in a town that sorely needs some entertainment, as well as do something positive for charity. I mean, why be a hater? ANYONES presence is welcome at the event, and if staying up for days on end isn’t your thing (it sure isn’t mine!) come play some cards anyways. My home game will be played at the venue, come join us! The guys from this website put on a great promotion last weekend, no-one was moaning about that, so lets continue on in that fashion.

  13. Shaughant says:

F.T.R., Wanganui has a decent pile of complete sharks to fill the outer tables – bring your A-game :)
